Newly Renovated Home for Maritime Business College’s Animal Care Programs

Maritime Business College moves Animal Care programs to be closer to SPCA

In more than 100 years of history, Maritime Business College (MBC) has been committed to excellence in education. Our approach to Animal Care training in Nova Scotia is no exception to this. Students of the MBC Veterinary Technology program have recently scored higher than the national average on their qualifying exams (Veterinary Technician National Examination) to become Registered Veterinary Technicians.

MBC is always looking for opportunities to improve the education and outcomes for their students. “I’m excited to share that new and returning students to our Animal Care programs will be starting this fall in a custom built space,” said Anne Marie Grewal, Director. “We will offer a unique opportunity for students to pursue their passion for animal care with state-of-the-art facilities for animals and students.”

MBC’s programs for animal care will be moving to a new home in Dartmouth, close to the SPCA. “It is our hope the proximity of Maritime Business College to our provincial office will help students be exposed to the mission, vision and values of the Nova Scotia SPCA,” says Elizabeth Murphy, CEO of the Nova Scotia SPCA. “Compassionate accomplished Registered Veterinary Technicians (RVTs) play an important role ensuring animals who become part of your family are in the best of health and have the best of care.” MBC’s incoming classes in Animal Care will begin their their Clinical studies in a newly renovated space on Scarfe Court this fall.

Veterinary Technician Program

MBC’s Veterinary Technician diploma program provides students with the skills and knowledge needed to pursue a career in veterinary practices, health science schools, hospitals, research institutes, the food industry, wildlife services, zoological parks, government agencies, and industry sales.

Graduates from this program are trained to work in a variety of animal care settings under the supervision of a Veterinarian. They are trained to help with physical assessments, collect samples and perform laboratory tests, prepare animals and operating rooms for surgery, monitor anesthesia during surgeries, administer vaccines and medications, provide post-operative care, and maintain a high standard of cleanliness and maintenance. Administrative tasks include filling veterinary prescriptions, maintaining inventories of animal care supplies, scheduling operating rooms, preparing invoices, and maintaining records

Veterinary Assistant Program

MBC’s Veterinary assistant program is a program for compassionate and capable animal lovers. Graduates in the field ensure a comfortable, safe and sanitary work environment, providing pet owners with the confidence their pet will receive the best possible treatment.

Veterinary Assistants support veterinarians and technicians in their daily tasks by cleaning and maintaining equipment, feeding, exercising and grooming patients, preparing and sanitizing surgery suites, and restraining and handling patients. They are also actively involved in clerical and administrative work, including customer reception, records management, and scheduling appointments.

MBC develops new programs to meet the changing needs of industry, and update existing programs to ensure that students are expertly trained. MBC graduates enter the workforce trained with the up-to-date skills that they need to excel. Our practical, hands-on training is delivered by experts in their industry.
