An Anesthesia Technician is an allied healthcare worker who assists with the administration and monitoring of anesthesia and has an extensive knowledge of anesthesia techniques, instruments, supplies, and technology.
An Anesthesia Technician (AT) is not a doctor or a nurse. The role of the AT is to support the work done by the professional anesthesia personnel. ATs are responsible for managing the anesthesia equipment and for its proper maintenance.

Anesthesia Technicians are compassionate and caring individuals working with the anesthesia care team and patients, in a confidential and respectful environment. As active team members, Anesthesia Technicians participate in the asepsis program, using universal precautions, and working in sterile areas in the operating room.
The responsibilities of ATs have increased over the years, and the trend seems to favor increased demand for their specialized skills, along with greater awareness of anesthesia technology as a career.
Depending on individual expertise and training the duties of the AT may include equipment maintenance and servicing such as preparing supplies and equipment for cleaning, sterilizing, assembling, calibrating and testing, troubleshooting, requisitioning and recording of inspections and maintenance. They may operate a variety of mechanical, pneumatic and electronic equipment used to monitor, evaluate and manage the patient undergoing anesthesia. The anesthesia technician works under the direction of the anesthesiologist caring for patients in locations outside the operating room such as the IWK, Day Surgery, and MRI.

The Anesthesia Technology Program at Maritime Business College has been developed in partnership with Capital Health. The program was developed in part to proactively prepare for many AT retirements that will happen over the next few years.
Since the inception of the program, other hospitals have been contacted to introduce our graduates, and to source job opportunities. Because this is a very specialized position, and because class size is limited, graduates are well positioned to find employment as ATs solely in the Halifax Regional Municipality.
Founded in 1899, Maritime Business College has provided advanced career training to thousands of students in Nova Scotia. The Instructors at Maritime Business College are trained and experienced experts in the industry. Insightful classroom instruction is complemented by practical training.
