Veterinary Assistant Instructors

Robin Keane, B.A.M., B.B.A., R.V.T

Robin is an Instructor of the Veterinary Assistant Program. She graduated from Acadia University with a Bachelor of Arts in Music and a degree in Business Administration. She received a diploma in Animal Health Technology at Olds College in Alberta. She is currently working on a Certificate in Canine Rehabilitation at the University of Tennessee.

Robin has 10 years’ experience in the animal care field, 7 of which were in a small animal clinic. Before entering this industry, she spent 3 years teaching English as a second language in Korea and traveling Asia. Robin has an interest in animal rescue and conservation. This passion has taken her to such places as Costa Rica, where she volunteered protecting the Leatherback turtle. She is dedicated to rescuing unwanted hunting beagles and initiated the Nova Scotia Chapter of the Canadian Rescue, Beagle Paws. She spends most of her free time acting as the Adoption Coordinator of this organization and spreading awareness.

Donna Cassie, V.A.

Donna, a graduate of Maritime Business College, began working in the veterinary field in 2004. She is the proud pet parent to a Labrador Retriever cross named Gunny.

Donna worked in a number of hospitals around HRM providing support to the technicians and veterinarians in all areas of the hospital. She was also responsible for assisting in set up of new veterinary hospitals and the implementation of standard operating procedures.

Donna has coached a number of new assistants and technicians starting in the veterinary field over the course of her 10 years in industry.

Career Opportunities

Veterinary assistants work mainly in clinics and hospitals, helping technicians treat the injuries and illnesses of animals. You can choose to work in small private practices or large veterinary hospitals. However, there are also many jobs available in pet daycares, boarding facilities, farms, kennels, shelters, pet stores, animal rehabilitation centres, zoos, and in the field of pet grooming.

The pet care industry is booming, and is creating new jobs in the industry. People view their pets as part of the family and will spend generously to care for them, even during tough economic times.
